What is the state of the news media in EU countries?

The workshop is a key opportunity to analyse the collected data and start building a media capture risk map, which will be made available on Bridgegap. The workshop is organised by the WP7 team of Bridgegap (Università degli Studi di Perugia, Rita Marchetti) and it takes place on September 30, 2024 in Perugia, focusing on the concept of media capture and how media systems are transforming with the rise of social media platforms.

The concept of media capture is conceived in relation to the media’s interactions with politics, business and other “vested interests”. It is used to describe media outlets that are under the direct or indirect control of political/business interests, even though they are no longer formally and publicly under state control.

Media capture in strictly sense is just one aspect of the problem. There are many nuances to the phenomenon that scholars have tried to identify using various concepts, such as media capture, media colonisation and instrumentalisation.
